Prevention

So, just FYI, September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide finds strong emotions in me for many reasons. I will give a link with statistics, etc., but as with much else in life, it is one thing to know facts and be able to parrot them, it is another thing to go beyond said facts and ACT. If this, or mental illness is something you struggle with, there are many FREE resources available at your disposal. And there is NO SHAME in using them! Hell, I have, and they helped me. Just because one thing may not work, don’t disregard everything. Keep fighting the good fight, reach out,stay connected, avoid isolation (you are not expected to be Mary Sunshine)  Genuine!!! people will be there for you.Good times and bad.NAMI Suicide Statistics and Help

Mental: Like I said, don’t let your ego and pride get in the way of asking for help.No man is an island, unfortunately, we are consistently instructed to “take it like a man” and be self-sufficient. Trust me, I have had instances of feeling “less-than” if I sought help. I think this is particularly true for men. Much of society tells us that it is “weak” and “shameful”. But what is more weak,someone who fights or someone who rolls over and lets themselves get beat?

Physical:Take care of your body,it is with you for your entire journey. Getting into a routine helps me. Specific actions at specific times; I am scatter brained, so pill boxes and alarms help me. Also having a sleep routine makes a WORLD of difference for me. I have found myself trained into these routines (usually) so that they’re second hand. But I had to do them consistently for awhile before this happened, which was hard… I want things NOW!

Social: Don’t let your pride (like mental) keep you from leaning on people. It is always a good feeling to know that you have people who will be there for you. At the same time…don’t rely on people so much that you can’t do anything yourself. It’s a balancing act.
